In Memory of Stan Lee – African Artists Pay Tribute

November 15, 20183 min read

There hasn’t been a more iconic, feisty and inspiring character than Stan Lee in comic books and pop-culture and we lost him this week. Stan Lee, who was a driving force of Marvel Comics and in effect, the inspiration for millions of people across the world to go into comics has left a glorious legacy that will last for generations.

The 95-year-old comic book veteran helped create many of the greatest characters and storylines in comic book publishing history and in recent times, the superhero movie universe. Black Panther, Spiderman, Gwen Stacy, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Professor X, Magneto, Jean Grey, Captain Mar-Vell are just a few of the iconic characters Stan Lee co-created.

People have taken to social media to pay tribute to the icon and African artists haven’t been left out. African illustrators are paying their tributes the only way they know how – engraving permanent memories of Stan Lee in their own art styles and sharing what the legend’s legacy means for them.

What follows is a collection of  some of the tributes we came across on social media.

I like to think Stan Lee hasn’t died but has simply travelled to another dimension. Stan Lee’s departure from this reality will be greatly felt. May he find rest inside the soul stone.

Excelsior!
