Recapping The MTN Apps Challenge Roadshow

The #MTNAppsChallenge v5.0 roadshows are over. The last roadshow was held exactly a week ago, 8th February 2018 at the Mensah Sarbah Hall inside the University of Ghana, Legon campus. 

This year’s MTN Apps challenge took a different format. It saw the introduction of panel discussion and a breakout session and the ever present exhibitions of apps, IoT projects and animated videos. The moderator of the program of the events was Kojo Akoto Boateng, a morning show host on CitiFM.

The first major roadshow was held at the University for Development Studies, Dungu campus in Tamale on 30th January 2018.  The event saw the exhibition of locally developed apps such as Blood Drive, CowTribe, Pasco, Online Bus Reservation and Early Food. In the animation booth was Benjamin an animator based on UDS campus, Tamale.

The second major roadshow took place two days later at the College of Science, Allotey Auditorium, KNUST, Kumasi campus. The event was well attended with participation from St. Louis Girls SHS, Opoku Ware SHS, Kumasi High SHS, TI Amass, Prempeh College, NIIT and students from KNUST ICT Department. Nana Yaw Donkor of YFM Kumasi was the moderator for activities at the Kumasi roadshow.

Participants were treated to a host of animated videos by local animators including, Francis Brown (Agorkorli), Toby Bertil Svanekiaer (A bird and a kite and Chaskele), Theophilus Bonney (Do It Right) and Drah Michael (Our Monument).

At the Cape Coast roadshow, Toby Bertil Svanekiaer was on hand to exhibit his animations to participants. He came with his drawing pad where he took participants through how he develops his characters and puts life into them.

Eyram Tawiah of Leti Arts, one of the judges for this season’s competition also showcased his company’s offerings at the exhibitions. Another 3D animator making waves currently on the local scene, Razahk Issaka, creator of the Aluta Series, also exhibited.

They, together with other exhibitors gave participants especially SHS students, an experience of a lifetime. Participants at the Accra Roadshow that was held on 8th February, 2018 at the Mensah Sarbah Hall included students from Accra Academy SHS, Labone SHS, Tema Presec SHS, Chemu SHS, Tema SHS, NIIT, School of Technology – GIMPA and the University of Ghana.

Chiiief, the host of MTN Apps TV was present at all the roadshows to interact with participants, exhibitors and resource persons.  Expect to see episodes of the MTN Apps TV on the MTN Ghana social media pages to catch up with events that happened during the roadshows.

How to apply:

Eligibility:

  • Participants can enter the competition with one or more projects
  • Participants can enter as one of three categories (SHS, Tertiary and Freelance)
  • The contest is open to all developers in Ghana
  • Local apps available for Android, Blackberry, Windows, and Apple stores can enter the competition
  • Previous challenge winners can participate with a new project.

Deadline for registration for the apps challenge is 28th February 2018! Also, animators have to submit their storyboard by 28th February, 2018.
